The BNFC Hunger to Hope Indigenous Barrie program started with a clear need and a determined vision. Through volunteerism and the kindness of others we have been able to continue providing to those in need. We have seen many food and monetary donations since our inception in July 2017, which without, we would not be able to fulfill our mission.

In the last two months of 2018 we have been thankful to the amazing kindnesses of the congregation of Saint James United Church in Stroud and the Burton Avenue United Church in Barrie.

Saint James United Church has, through two separate drives, graciously collected between $500.00 and $600.00 worth of food and hygiene products for our food cupboard.

On Sunday February 25, 2018 Burton Avenue United Church sponsored a fundraiser bake sale. Church members supplied home baked desserts and took monetary donations totaling $615.00. Following the fundraiser we were told they usually raise approximately $300.00; seeing this level of kindness reinforces our goals of community and reconciliation. In addition some members also contributed food donations.

In the County of Simcoe approximately one in ten individuals are experiencing food securities. Due to this we see at least one family and one individual daily. The donations collected through these two organizations will help at least 30 families and individuals.

Given the kindheartednesses witnessed through these events our Hunger to Hope Indigenous Barrie Coordinator had this to say: “It was great, I was blown away by the amount of help we got and how kind everybody was. After these events they’re looking for other ways to help; both locations have committed to other fundraising events in the future. It is due to support such as this that helps us feed our community.”
